The "American Dream" Today

The "American Dream" that every immigrant and person in poverty dreams of is that classic "rags to riches" tale, where through hard work, a little bit of luck and self-sacrifice the family rises to the top of society. The old "American Dream" of a nice house in the suburbs with a white picket fence is no longer sufficient to America's wishes. Today the dream is to be like Bill Gates, to have more money then you know what to do with and enjoy life care free. I feel as though today Americans are always looking for the get rich quick scheme, where as the older generations were built on hard workexternal image Mansion-and-the-yacht-746795.jpg and were rewarded for their hard work.

The "American Dream" that I have personally always in visioned is one of immense wealth, owning multiple houses, having a beautiful wife, dozens of cars and most of all being able to buy whatever you want whenever you want. But who wouldn't want that, its everyone's fantasy even though less then 0.1% of America lives like this. But hey, its nice to dream.

America today is built on a foundation of technology, we today are more concerned with who will be our computer technicians then who will grow our food and build our cities. This change has changed the way kids grow up and how the "American Dream" is in visioned. Back in the day (1950s-1980s) kids grew up with hopes of one day having a 9-5 job, a wife, a couple kids and the house with the white picket fence. Its all changed now, the "American Dream" is now something of dreams its unreachable to almost all. Whereas before the dream was reachable through hard work, the dream today can only be reached through winning the lottery.

Today the "American Dream" is portrayed in images as being over, a simple google image search of the term "American Dream" turns up dozens of images that state the "American Dream" is over. I don't feel as though the dream is over, I feel as though it has just evolved. The new "American Dream" is much more of a dream then in the past.
