The American Dream has changed a lot since it was first established. When people used to think of their American Dream they would have goals like starting a family, having the ability to gain an education, get a good job to support your family, be able to own a house with that white picket fence, and most of all just having the ability to be free. The ability to try to create your own American Dream was the main reason why so many immigrants came America. Especially because they could be free.
Today the American Dream is seen as totally different thing. Many people in today's times feel that being free is a right and they don't feel as special to be free because they have never had to live without being free. Americans today want much more materialistic things to be happy now. So in today's times more people want things like a lot of money, big fancy houses, many toys, such as new technologies, a fancy car, and being able to go on many vacations.
Now with the recession the American Dream is starting to change again back to something similar to what it used to be. This is because people are losing money and many Americans are trying to find ways to save up. There aren't as many people going out to buy things just to show off to their friends. They just want to buy stuff that they are going to need otherwise people will be losing money way to fast. Now with credit cards it is even worse then ever because it creates an even bigger temptation to just spend and not save up.
