american_dream_just_add_money1.jpgThe "American Dream" Today

The American dream has been a long lasting image that people strive for within our country. The perfect family with wealth, a house with a white picket fence, a car, a dog; in other words, success. Those people with a life identical to one described are the lucky ones. They are the immigrants or the ancestors of immigrants that actually got to experience the American dream. As time goes on the American dream has split in two ways. The original has been revamped to include million dollar homes, helicopters, ten cars, etc. But the opposite American dream is far from these successes; it’s the mere hope for survival.

In recent years the availability of the typical American dream to immigrants is fading, it is extremely difficult for someone to achieve the American dream from practically nothing. The fact that the American dream isn't as accessible anymore has not stopped immigrants from believing there' still a piece for them. People are still coming to America but when they come here they become stuck. This has caused a rapid increase of illegal immigrants. These immigrants are no longer striving for the typical American dream but are rather hoping they will not be caught; their dream is to one day to not have to live in fear. This has become excessively apparent with the recent 2010 census.roommate-wanted.gif

People who come to America are hoping to make a life out of what little they have. The reality is that moving up the status ladder is very difficult. The difficulty of making a living has made the American dream practically impossible. The cost of living in America plus the costs of products and services are incredibly high for someone working a job paying minimum wage. Families in this situation are often in poverty or lower middle class.

The 2010 census brought forth many controversies, including illegal immigrants. Census takers are not allowed to tell anyone about the information they receive, it's all confidential. This is mainly so that everyone feels safe enough to come forward and turn in their census form. If everyone handed in the form the distribution of money and how it's used throughout our country could be more realistic to the specific area. The thing is that people do not believe that their information is safe. Therefore many illegal immigrants are hesitant to turn in the census form.

I’m not entirely sure what my stance on illegal immigrants is, it’s not necessarily a good thing since they are breaking the law. What I do believe is that the lives of the illegal immigrants greatly signify the other side of the American dream; the people struggling to survive. Not only do these people not have enough resources to go through the process of gaining citizenship but they must put a lot of energy into remaining hidden.

Illegal immigrants are not the only ones who are suffering within America; there are many American people who are also struggling to survive. Poverty is extremely prevalent within our country. Families don’t have health insurance, they are homeless, and they are hungry. The American dream is not a reality to them; it’s the definition of a dream. The house, cars, and money are so out of reach they are striving to survive.
